Who is Hibernator?
Hibernator is a 4 piece melodic post-hardcore band from Montana.
Whereabouts in Montana do you fellas hail from?
All of us love in different towns as of right now
Bozeman, Butte, Anaconda, and Boulder Montana.
Kill one, marry one - Just kidding, What's the story behind Hibernator?
Well we started in 2016 after A Midnight Drive, our old band, kind of fell apart. It was the four core members of that band. After writing our first EP we had lost our drummer. Luckily, we met Anthony and he dug playing music with us. He re-recorded all the drums on the EP, and learned the songs fairly quickly. After playing shows for a year on that EP, we decided we wanted to get some new material recorded. We just spent 10 days last March in Portland recording 6 new songs and 2 old ones reworked a tiny bit. We recorded at interlace audio with Stephan Hawkes.
Does the fact that you guys are from Butte change your music at all?
Oh, Butte. Actually all of our songs are about the Lady of the Rockies, and the pit.
Do you guys have a thematic message that you're trying to convey to the audience through your general hodgepodge of imagery, lyrics, and sound?
Really we all sit down after we get a song we all feel comfortable playing, figure out what we want the song to be about and work on all the lyrics together. Typically they’re about loss, coping, accountability, and life in general.
Alright boring questions out of the way, do you think technological singularity is something we should seriously be worried about? I for one find Nick Bostrum's theory on simulation theory compelling if not ironclad in terms of technology subsuming the human experience.
I couldn't agree more.
Since playing last year's Dreyfest you released a self-titled EP. Isn't recording your music something sellouts do?
Well, unfortunately, we aren’t the greatest at it. Starting out I, Phillip, wanted to really have a DIY feel for our music and production. Recently, we’ve been going to Stephan to engineer and produce our new songs. I think getting his advice was a really cool experience. To get another amazing musician involved in our idea and really improved our sound.
I notice that you guys like to do unorthodox covers, what's the story about that? Can we expect D'Angelo anytime soon?
We have kind of moved away from covers but maybe since were coming back to Dreyfest four our second year we could bust out a new one for you guys.
What are you most excited to do during your stay in beautiful Billings, Montana? Usually people enjoy making fun of the three refineries but perhaps you'll enjoy any of our other countless and world-famous tourist sites? Too many to name for convenience sake...
Honestly I think I am most excited to just meet new people in the Billings scene. You guys seem to be so organized and inspired in the music and arts scene going on currently in the city.
Anyone you're psyched to see/throw stuff at during Dreyfest?
Riley in Tiny Plastic Stars, and Charcoal Squids is always a good friend to see and we’re excited to catch up on everything they’re doing. Panther Car’s new EP is great so I’m excited to see those songs live finally! Our new friends in Deathwish will be good to catch up with again, maybe throw some shit at them while they play. Also, Hibernator’s best friends and lover boys Chairea will be wonderful to see. They’re always amazing to catch being all cute!
Can you please explain the photo below?
I could but I don’t think it would be appropriate. See you at Dreyfest!
